tea friendship

a far away dear friend sent me an adorable card and inside was a hand sewn tea bag holder stuffed with a few tea bags. The inscription on the tea bag case is:
"I cannot sit and chat with you the way I'd like to do, so brew yourself a cup of tea, I'll think of you, you think of me."

The inscription on the card itself said, "A person can hear, but a friend listens for the meaning. A person can look, but a friend sees the heart. A person can know, but a friend understands your dreams."

thank you dear friend, what a treasure YOU are!

there are no words.....

on homemaking

"A woman needs to cultivate the habitual feeling that all the events of her nursery and kitchen are brought about by the permission of our Heavenly Father, and that fretfulness or complaint in regard to these is, in fact, complaining at the appointments of God, and is really as sinful as submissive murmurs amid the sorer chastisements of His hand. And a woman who cultivates this habit of referring all the minor trials of life to the wise and benevolent agency of a heavenly Parent, and daily seeks His sympathy and aid to enable her to meet them with a quiet and cheerful spirit, will soon find it the perennial spring of abiding peace and content."

golfing with Grandpa

Grandpa and Grandma A came to visit for a full week and we got to spend some fun times with them. Grandpa loves to golf and has taken Jon to the driving range before but this time he took Jon and Emilee (and Daddy got to tag along and try his arm at swinging as well) to do a few holes on the course. They had a great time and love golfing with their grandpa!

Open House

we had our homeschool co-op open house night. Our theme was Around the World since we had studied several different countries throughout the school year. We set up several display tables showing all the work the kids had done on their reports.

Each family had a table with their own display of work from the school year. Here is Jon and Em in front of China. They wore their clothing that our friends in China gave them.

Dear Children - Not A Missionary

We've exposed you to a lot of things "missions". We've used resources like these (Missionary Stories with the Millers and Window on the World) to teach you about past and current missionaries spreading the gospel, we've encouraged your involvement with missions first hand (MAF), and we've made connection with missionaries around the world to give you the opportunity to bond personally with missionaries in the field (Indonesia, Nigeria, Brazil, China, Mexico, and Honduras, to name a few). We've talked about Paul and the passion he had as a missionary. Some of your closest friends are MKs. But you aren't MKs, you're PKs. We tell you that all believers are missionaries to earth on assignment from God.....yet, we've been known to say "your parents are not missionaries." We seem to always separate ourselves by classification when talking about "missionaries"...."they are missionaries" as if we aren't. No, we are just people on assignment from God, citizens of heaven, on earth (foreign land) seeking to further the kingdom of God (by the spreading of the gospel and it's truth). So, even though we don't have to write a monthly newsletter proving our progress to those who pray for us faithfully (and thankfully we don't have to!), are we missionaries? What about the other believers around us, right here, in this culture? Are they missionaries?
Those closest to me often hear me say "I'm not cut out to be a missionary!" Some of you reading this are probably nodding your heads cause I've said it recently. But the more I say that, the more that God impresses a burden for missions on our hearts. I've wondered from time to time why God puts that burden on our hearts when we feel clearly that we are not called to go oversees? The logical answer has been "because God needs others to support missionaries." Yes, God needs others to feel passionate about supporting missionaries who go oversees. This is true. Yet this past year, my eyes are being opened to the fact that we can say with our lips "we are all missionaries because earth is not our home", but what does that look like? Are we willing to see ourselves as counter cultural in a confused culture? Are we willing to have a Christian worldview or are we just another church goer in our society?

Even though we don't have a language barrier to deal with (although sometimes I wonder about that...especially when we are speaking the same language and still don't understand each other), and unlike oversees missionaries we are super familiar with our twisted culture and it's challenges when ministering (since we've grown up in it), and even though we are more comfortable with the size of bugs we have here than say a foreign land, and yet there are, as my husband puts it, "similar hazards of the job".

Like oversees missionaries we struggle to balance ministry and family life...there are usually no defined boundaries, we are on call 24/7, we are seen as the spiritual professionals in times of crisis, we often carry more of a ministry load than we should, we feel burdened daily for those we are trying to minister to, we have to learn to be flexible, our families are watched carefully like living in a fishbowl, there are many expectations, we live off other people's giving, we often feel like we have to always have it together to be an example yet remain humble and transparent, and there is usually little time for marriage quality time. I guess that's why we are so drawn to missionaries and feel so encouraged by them in our own ministry...we relate to them and sense they understand our ministry. So, I keep asking myself, are we missionaries? I keep getting invited to be a part of missionary mom blogs because I'm a "missionary on US soil". So, does one have to be unfamiliar with their culture to be a missionary? Do you have to learn a new language to be a missionary? Do you have to move away from "home" to be a missionary and then visit in 2 year intervals? I'm starting to see two types of missionaries, 1. oversees missionaries 2. local missionaries. I know missionaries that are supported in the states (like pastors) and I know missionaries that are in other countries that are self supported (like my sister and brother-in-law)...so financial support doesn't always define missionaries. What about pastors in churches reaching the unsaved....there are church plants that for sure could be seen as missionary pastors but what about the pastor in an established church? I've learned in ministry that there are plenty of unsaved people in established churches! Just when you think you aren't coming in contact with the unsaved, you're reminded that it's not just the unchurched that can be lost. And what about the congregation? Aren't they missionaries too? Why are they different from the pastor? Shouldn't all believers be missionaries.....I know many oversees missionaries that think so.

I know God is teaching me these things to further His use of me. Am I willing is the final question. If I can view myself as a missionary, am I willing? Or do I hold too tightly to my plans my way? Am I willing to endure the "hazards of the job" like oversees missionaries? Am I willing to witness to a culture that although I'm familiar with, at times I feel totally out of touch with and confused by? Am I willing to live in a way that says "God's will for my life is more important than..... (you fill in the blank)." I want to be used and I'm learning that it means being a missionary in any land, foreign or not, oversees or not, familiar or not, supported or not, comfortable or not.

Signed,
Mom (not a missionary?)

baseball

baseball practice has started and we are up to our ears in baseball. Besides Dad coaching and Mom being Team Mom, we are now back to Jon talking about baseball morning, noon, and night. He's had two practices so far and he got his uniform last night. He's very excited as are we.

I posted his game schedule on the sidebar for those interested in coming to his games. We do PAL which is a nice short season. =0)

Random thoughts.....

Library cards expire, who knew? (very inconvenient might I add!)

I've never had a whole apple core go through my washer AND dryer, till now.

Toothpaste comes out of carpet quite nicely and even leaves it looking a little cleaner!

happy mother's day....

to all the wonderful Moms in our lives. We've had a lot going on in our own lives recently and so even though we wanted to do more for some of you, we hope that our love will suffice this year.

To each of our own mothers, we love you so much and appreciate all you do for us! You are both loving and caring and mean so much to us. You help us when we need help, you comfort us when we need cheering up, (you bless us with incredible gifts!), and you love our children so much!

To Grandma Marie, we'll be calling you today to remind you of our love for you and how you've blessed our lives through the years. We wish we could see you today. We appreciate how much you love each of us!

To Katie on your first mother's day, may you enjoy every bit of the joy of motherhood today as you snuggle that little bundle! We love you and appreciate how you've loved on our own children. May God bless you with many incredible memories in the future in your role as mother.

To Aunt Jenny, what a precious gift you've been given in Zoe and we pray that your day today is one of joyful reflection on the sweet child Zoe has become. Have a wonderful day soaking up all the goodness of being a mother today! We love you and miss you.

To all the other mothers in our lives, the ones that have invested in our lives, the ones who have been examples to us, the ones that have encouraged us, the ones that have helped us nurture our children and train them, the ones that have prayed for us, and all the ones that are at the same point in parenting who come along side us to encourage us and remind us that we are all in this together.....may God be glorified through all of you as you model the heart of a mother today!

one little insignificant spider.....

My son loves spiders....he catches them quite often and sometimes even leaves them in their clear containers on my kitchen counter. Lovely. I'm use to jumping from time to time and have pretty much been able to catch myself before I put it in the fridge with the mayo when I'm clearing the counters...but hey, that's not what this post is about.

So, the other day I hear someone (Emilee) screaming bloody murder out back and as I look up out the window she's shaking and running to the swing set for safety.... ya, only a spider on the side of the house. Brother to the rescue catches it and then decides to catch a few more despite his sister's pleas to just kill them. She's compassionate that way. He laughs and says "I don't get why girls don't like cute spiders." Um, ya, now they are "cute"????

So, he hunts for more so that said spider won't be lonely in it's cage of course and decides they are his new pets so into the house they go....I don't even let the dog in the house so why does he think spiders can come in is beyond me! But I gotta pick my battles right, so "mi casa su casa spiders and welcome to your new habitat complete with a/c, heat, and wall to wall carpet".

Half an hour later Jon declares that it's time to let the spiders go back to their natural habitat so they will be released into the wild (i.e. our backyard-apparently it's "the wild") without further ado. Stoically he marches them outside and sets them free (after a picture was taken so that they will always be remembered of course) and who starts sobbing??!?!?!?!?!? Ya, little sister is sobbing because she's going to miss the "cute" spiders and apparently got quite attached in just 30 min. and changed her mind about how she felt when she first screamed for her dear life. Her sobbing tugs on the emotional heartstrings of her brother and he starts crying and comes to mom for comfort....30 minutes ago I had two very happy kids playing outside until a spider came down and sat down beside her and now I've got two sobbing kids....

Iyiyi! How can one little spider unsettle the peace and function of an entire family in just 30 minutes. It's truly amazing!

learning to diaper

Here is the progression of Emilee's first independent diaper change of Fiona....I think it's so funny to watch Emilee's efforts but also to see Fiona watching her and just tumbling around patiently waiting for this 7 year old to finish. It was too cute for words! But alas, she did it all by herself! Since she doesn't have any younger siblings we have to get her trained with her cousins.

from a veteran minister

I greatly enjoy hearing faithful servants in the ministry sharing their years of experience.... there's nothing more encouraging than gleaning the wisdom of a believer who has served the Lord for decades as they are now in the later part of life. These are notes I took last year at a special MAF gathering as Charles Shepson encouraged us to press on in our ministries through heartaches and trials. No ministry is without them.....no is life without them.

1. Heartaches will make you bitter or better. You choose how you will respond each time one comes. You allow God to either use them for your benefit or to allow them to callous your heart.

2. God promises that there WILL BE heartaches (but take heart, I have overcome the world!) The storms of life will come in ministry and in our personal lives but God has provided us with His strength and encouragement. We have nothing to fear because He has overcome the world.

3. Praise God in the midst of heartaches. It will give you comfort and it reminds you that He is growing you and there for you.

4. Look for the silver lining. There will be joy in the storm somewhere, you just have to look for it. Sometimes we see the good when it's over.

5. Heartaches bring you closer to people and bring new people to you. Don't miss the opportunity for fellowship during heartaches.

Kodiak.....a day in history

you well know by now that our hearts are well endured to MAF and the ministries they are carrying out there....not only with their airplanes but with their learning technologies, humanitarian efforts, and their gospel spreading ministries.....

Saturday we were honored to join them for the dedication ceremony of their new plane, the Kodiak. The dream of this plane has been in the works for at least 10 years. In the past, MAF has taken planes and remodeled them to meet their needs. Each plane has to be modified to even go on the mission field but the Kodiak was designed specifically for missionary aviation! The Kodiak will fly on cheaper fuel as well which will save the agency lots of money!

It was a day in missions history that we will always remember.....it was very exciting

waiting for the ceremony to start

everyone in the hanger finding their seats with the podium in front of the new Kodiakafter the speakers everyone gathered around the Kodiak for a circle of prayerthis specific plane will be going to Papua Indonesia
linked hand in hand we bowed for prayer.....
There are 16 more Kodiaks on order from the plane manufacturer but only 3 are funded. MAF is hoping to raise enough support to fund the last 13 planes to be sent around the world to be used by missionary pilots to transport food, livestock, sick and injured people to hospitals, and much more.

We had heavy rains and thunderstorms all day but the president of MAF had prayed that morning that we'd have sunshine for just the ceremony and just before the ceremony started the clouds cleared, the sun came out and as soon as it was over another downpour rolled in.
